Alfheim (Álfheimr) Kingdom of the Light Elves ruled by Freyr (2023)

Rarely mentioned in Old Norse texts and mythology in general,Alfheim was one of the Nine Realms in Norse cosmology.. This delightful world of light and fertility was home to the light (or shining) elves.

Alfheim is in the sky, high up in the crownthe world tree Yggdrasil, Not far away fromAsgardand Vanaheim. Although not clearly described in Norse literature, the realm is considered quite enchanting given the nature of the elves.

Thirteenth-century Icelandic mythographerSnorri Sturluson(1179-1241) described thelight elvesbrighter and more beautiful than the sun, so we can assume that his homeland was a graceful realm of light and beauty.

The name Alfheim (Old Norse:Elfenwelt) derives from the Old Norse words for "elf" and "house", meaning the home of the elves. It also meansworld of the light elves, which has a more specific meaning: home of the light elves.

Alfheim in Old Norse Texts

As the home of the Elves, Alfheim is only mentioned twice in Old Norse texts. In one of the famous mythological poems of thePoetic Edda - Humor, stanza 5 begins with these lines:

Ydalir they call | the place where ul
A hall was prepared for him;
And Alfheim the gods | Freyr gave once
As a gift of teeth in ancient times.

Sturluson described the elven kingdom inGylfi's Deception– the first part of the Prose Edda (chapter 31):

There are many places there, and some glorious ones. What is called Álfheimr is one in which live men called elves of light; but the Dark Elves inhabit the land, and they are different in appearance but much more different in nature. The light elves are brighter than the sun, but the dark elves are blacker than pitch.

The inhabitants of Alfheim

Magical beings known as light elves (Norse:Elf)They are the inhabitants of Alfheim. These bright, beautiful, luminous beings have inspired art, music, and creativity in general.

In Norse mythology there are two opposing types of elves:light elves(fairies of light) andblack elves (Dökkálfar). Dark elves inhabit the earth and have darker pigmentation, as light (or luminous) elves "are more beautiful to behold than the sun," as Sturluson described them. Their exalted position in mythology is manifested in a constant association with the gods in Norse poetry, particularly the Vanir.

Alfheim (Álfheimr) Kingdom of the Light Elves ruled by Freyr (1)

light elves (fairies of light)

light elvesThey are powerful and magical beings that radiate light and purity around their existence. They are often associated with gods and humans with whom they engage in various affairs. They are loved, but at the same time many fear their powers and magic, so everyone respects them.

Also, Light Elves have very ambivalent relationships with humans. They were often the cause of human illnesses, but they also had the power to cure them in return for a fitting sacrifice. After some sagas (your story,The Story of the Hrólf Children), humans and elves could crossbreed and have half-human, half-elven children, often anthropomorphic in appearance and possessing extraordinary magical and intuitive powers.

black elves (black elves)

As the sources depict Alfheim as the home of the Light Elves, as their other nameworld of the light elvessuggests the actual position of theblack elvesin Norse mythology remains uncertain to some extent. Ancient texts describe them as living under or in the earth, being darker-skinned and uglier than light elves.

This description more or less portrays them as dwarves, craftsmen prominent in Norse cosmology who live mostly in underground huts, where they forge important mythological artifacts. Many historians hold this viewDark elves are equal to dwarves, simply called differently in different traditions.

Alfheim's role in Norse cosmology

While surviving sources documenting anything about Alfheim are lacking, they give this realm a small but intriguing place in general mythology.

Its role is strongly associated with peace, beauty, harmony, fertility and love. Significance: This realm was largely bypassed by the constant clashes between Asgard and Jotunheim.

Is there a place on earth where Alfheim can be located?

American scholarJuan Lindow, Professor Emeritus of Old Norse and Folklore, even placed Alfheim geographically in some of his statements (Lindow, J.Norse Mythology: A Guide to Gods, Heroes, Rituals, and Beliefs). He and other modern scholars have noted that it may be the area between the mouths of the Göta and Glomma rivers on the border between Sweden and Norway.

People who live in this region are considered "fairer" than others. Because of this, the ancient inhabitants of Scandinavia thought of this land as Alfheim. Although the mythical Land of Light is said to have been inspired by this region, these claims are still the subject of debate by other scholars.

The common history of Freyr and Alfheim

Alfheim (Álfheimr) Kingdom of the Light Elves ruled by Freyr (2)

It has already been mentioned that elves are constantly intertwined with the Vanir gods in Norse folklore. Although these connections are not fully understood, one emerges as a constant in the Eddas. What could unite Alfheim and the Vanir? The answer lies in a God:monk.

ruler of the elven country

Alfheim, the kingdom of the light elves, was ruled by Freyr– God of fertility and prosperity associated with crops, rain and sunlight – suggesting a deep connection with the magic of the Vanir gods. Freyr is the son of the sea godStriveand the twin brother ofMadam, the best-known and most important goddess in Norse mythology.

In all her glory, she was one of the most respected deities in the Norse pantheon. old poemlast supperfrom the Poetic Edda she sings of him as "the greatest of the gods" and "hated by no one". Her skills transcend the realm of fertility and extend to her prowess on the battlefield, even duringRagnarökwhen he dies in battle with the fire giant Surtr, whose flaming sword ends up burning the world.

The reasons why he was such a beloved deity are not difficult to understand. In the Viking Age, people lived mainly from agriculture, so Freyr's affection for the fertile fields was in demand. It is therefore not surprising that many offerings were made to him on various occasions (harvest festivals, festivals, weddings, etc.).

Secret between Freyr and Alfheim

Historians and scholars have long pondered Freyr's role as ruler of Alfheim, but unfortunately there are not many satisfactory conclusions on the question. The actual connection between Freyr and the elves has never been fully explained: he was a Vanir god, not an elf, although he ruled his realm.

According to some myths, Freyr was gifted the kingdom of the elves as a child by the Aesir gods for the appearance of his first tooth. This ancient custom is still alive in Iceland and is called "tooth tax" (Old Norse).Tann-fe). Other myths state that Freyr was one of the hostages sent from Vanaheim to Asgard after the war between the gods Aesir and Vanir. After that he became ruler of Alfheim.

Circularity in Viking Tales

This might lead us to conclude that events in Norse mythology are not always chronological. Sources from myth, sagas, prose and poetry show that Viking storytelling was not always linear, but rather circular.

(Video) God of War - The War Between the Light and Dark Elves // All Scenes

A good example of this circular way of thinking and explaining is one of the most important events in Norse cosmology: Ragnarok. In some interpretations, this apocalyptic struggle is not the end of everything but the resurrection of the world.
